Neonatal Hepatitis
Neonatal hepatitis is a generic term to describe cholestasis (impaired bile flow) of a newborn's liver. Brought about by any number of individually rare complex disorders, it is also referred to as neonatal obstructive jaundice, neonatal cholestasis, neonatal direct or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
Clinical presentation generally includes hepatomegaly (enlarged liver) and jaundice; dark urine, clay-color stools, rash and purpura may also be present. Fifty percent of neonates present with an enlarged spleen. Rapid diagnosis is critical to therapeutic care. While the number of generic and nonspecific diagnoses have decreased, long-term prognosis is fair.
