Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Thoracic outlet syndrome is an abnormal condition that leads to a narrowing, impingement or weakening of the subclavian artery, which is located in the upper extremity and assists in peripheral circulation. Considered an upper extremity arterial occlusive disease, it is thought to result from a dysfunction between the clavicle and the first (cervical) rib. It can lead to Raynaud's phenomenon or thrombosis (blood clot). Symptoms include arm fatigue, a feeling of "pins and needles," and swelling. While it may resolve without intervention, removal of the clavicle and/or the rib may be warranted.
