Organ transplantation at the University of Minnesota began in 1963 with a kidney transplant between identical twins. Both the donor and recipient lived normal lives well into their senior years. More than 6,000 kidney transplants have been performed here to date.
 
A World Leader in Living Donor Transplants
University of Minnesota Physicians have performed more than 3,000 transplants using living donors - more than any other center in the world. More than half of the 200-plus kidney transplants performed annually at Fairview Health Services' University of Minnesota Medical Center use living donors.
