Protein C Deficiency
Proteins are necessary to hormone, antibody and enzyme formation, the elimination of waste, and the normal growth and development of muscle, skin and internal organs. Synthesized in the liver, protein C is an anticoagulant, inhibiting the production of a blood-clotting enzyme, thrombin. Low levels of protein C and functionally inadequate protein and clotting factors are correlated with impaired hepatic function and liver disease. Protein C deficiency is often seen in patients with acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and primary biliary cirrhosis.
Protein C is also vitamin-K dependent protein; the function of protein C depends on Vitamin K. A deficiency in vitamin K leads to a deficiency in protein C.
